Figure Skating

Introduction:

Ice skating began in Europe as a form of travel at least three thousand years ago.  Figure Skating, originally called Fancy Skating, began with England’s Royalty after 1660.  The upper class of European societies experimented with movement as they glided over Europe’s natural ice surfaces.  By the late 1800s, the national and international regulatory bodies of the sport were formed; the Amateur Skating Association of Canada was formed in Montreal in 1887 and the International Skating Union was formed in Scheveningen, Netherlands in 1892.
