Accession #: 2016.02.02
The Memphis Rogues were brought to Alberta in 1980 by Nelson Skalbania, who also brought the Atlanta Flames (NHL) to their forever home in Calgary the same year and was the first to sign Wayne Gretzky to a professional contract at 17yrs old. Re-branded as the Boomers, this indoor/ outdoor team were a one-year wonder in the North American Soccer League playing at the Stampede Corral and McMahon Stadium. Although they finished their indoor season just shy of the playoffs, in their outdoor season the Boomers made the playoffs but were beat by the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the first round grinding their first and only season to a halt in 1981.
