November Artifact of the Month

Artifact: Edmonton Grads Sweater

Accession #: 91.17.01

Year: c. 1915-1923

Description:

The Edmonton Grads basketball team has gone down in Alberta sports history for their record-breaking wins and impressive win-loss record of 96.2%. Official records state that the Grads played a total of 522 games, winning 502 of them. This sweater belonged to Helen (Northup) Alexander, who played for the Grads in 1939. It displayed the Edmonton Grads team name on the front and ‘Northup’ on the back. The Edmonton Grads left behind a legacy as the most successful women’s basketball team of the early 20th century before their disbandment in 1940, when wartime made it more difficult for international games to be played.

The Grads were acknowledged as World Champions from 1937 to 1940, and were voted Canada’s greatest basketball team of the first half of the 20th century.
